Moalboal, Cebu: A Snorkeling Paradise Where Sea Turtles Swim Beside You
Last year, I visited Cebu with my nephew and mother, staying at a resort on Mactan Island. We took a side trip to Moalboal, and it was so incredible that I had to come back. This time, I traveled with a close friend, and our mission was simple: more freedom, more relaxation, and all the sea turtle snorkeling we could handle.

Getting to Moalboal from Oslob
After swimming with whale sharks in Oslob (an experience I highly recommend), we made our way to Moalboal. The small town has a laid-back, village-like atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. While the accommodation options may not be five-star luxury, the charm of the place more than makes up for it.
Swimming with Sea Turtles Every Day
The absolute highlight of Moalboal is the sea turtles. You don’t need a boat tour or a special guide — just grab your snorkel gear and head to the water. The turtles are everywhere, especially near the popular snorkeling spots along the coast. Follow the crowds and you’ll have nearly a 100% chance of spotting one. There is something magical about floating alongside these gentle creatures in crystal-clear water.
Where to Stay: D Gecko Hotel
We stayed at D Gecko Hotel, which was clean and well-maintained. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the hallways were always freshly mopped (you swap your shoes for slippers at the door). One tip: bring a portable shower head. The water pressure in the bathroom was a bit unpredictable, so having your own can save some frustration.
Best Spots to Eat and Relax
Veranda Kitchen
After a morning of snorkeling, head to Veranda Kitchen for the most refreshing mango shake you’ve ever tasted. The ocean view from the terrace is stunning, and the relaxed vibe makes it the perfect spot to unwind. If you want a peaceful afternoon watching the waves, this is your place.
Hungry Monkey
We stumbled upon Hungry Monkey while walking around town, drawn in by the beautiful string lights. It doesn’t have an ocean view, but the cozy atmosphere and great people-watching make it a fantastic spot for an evening beer. The lighting is perfect for photos, and the laid-back energy is exactly what a beach town should feel like.
The MVP: Mango Shakes
I was never a huge mango person before this trip, but Moalboal converted me. The mango shakes here are on another level — sweet, tangy, creamy, and absolutely refreshing after a heavy meal. I’m planning to drink at least three a day on my next visit. If you take away one recommendation from this post, let it be this: order the mango shake everywhere you go.
Final Thoughts
Moalboal may not have the polished luxury of Mactan Island resorts, but it offers something far more valuable: authentic, unhurried experiences in one of the most beautiful underwater environments in the Philippines. If you can overlook slightly rustic accommodations, you’ll be rewarded with daily sea turtle encounters, breathtaking ocean views, and the kind of travel memories that stay with you forever.
